Eastbourne GP Specialist Training

A to Z of useful things

Contract

This is a specimen contract based on the standard BMA contract. Local adjustments (or changes to highlight recurrent issues) are highlighted.

Curriculum

Shan Palit, one of our trainers, has developed a useful curriculum for the GP attachments on the scheme. It works well, and in conjunction with the RCGP curriculum

Leave

Annual leave allowance while in any GP attachment (i.e. includes ITPs) is 25 days per annum for full-time equivalent, except for trainees who have accrued enough time working in the NHS who are entitled to 30 days. The details are here.

Study leave allowance while in any GP attachment (i.e. includes ITPs) is 30 days per annum for full-time equivalent. Attendance at VTS is compulsory and takes 18 days of this entitlement. Trainees will need to remember that there are other days which need to be viewed as compulsory – Deanery induction days and other preparation days for CSA etc.

Study time

Personal study time for trainees always arouses debate. Eastbourne scheme has agreed that, while the total weekly amount is 4 hours, it does not need to be on a given half-day – e.g. it could be one hour on four separate days per week. It cannot be accumulated over weeks and cannot be used to “lengthen” a holiday. Exact timing depends on a number of issues: specific study events, courses, practice workload, personal preference, to name but a few. More detailed documentation is available from this Deanery document.

Tutorial log

The attached log was suggested at a 2009 Cumberland Lodge Trainers' Workshop: it contains a skeleton log, MARS2 and a PDP.
